The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We

"Everyone knows Mitski," I thought to myself, over and over, when considering this feature, but it simply isn't true--even those who know her more bombastic Cowboy might be less familiar with the sparse acoustics of the later Inhospitable. Here, evidenced even by the font choice on her cover, Mitski rejects ease, pushing insistently toward the more difficult path--not out of spite but love. The world will never be easy or frictionless. "Like the Buddha inviting the demon Mara in for tea, The Land embraces brutal, daily pain — the necessary toll of transcendent love."
